Where wall sheeting turns up
Bathroom and laundry linings and external fibre-cement cladding are both on the Better Health Channel list of common asbestos locations. Brick and weatherboard homes can have it too, not just fibro, if built or renovated before 1990.
Read the Victorian home asbestos guidanceRenovating a bathroom is the usual trigger. Cutting, drilling or breaking sheets releases fibres, so test first with an asbestos check or testing visit.
How internal removal is done
The room is sealed, the sheets are wet down and unscrewed or lifted whole, then wrapped and labelled. Surfaces are cleaned and the area is checked before anyone goes back in.
For more than 10m² of non-friable removal, or any friable removal, a clearance certificate from an independent competent person is required before reoccupation. The licence holder arranges it.
Rules and disposal
The removalist notifies WorkSafe Victoria at least 24 hours before for non-friable work of 10m² or less, and at least 5 days before for more than 10m² or any friable work. Victorian rules differ for private householders and businesses. For any renovation involving asbestos, use a WorkSafe Victoria-licensed removalist.
Waste goes only to an EPA Victoria-authorised facility and is recorded in Waste Tracker.
