Reservoir housing and what it can mean for asbestos

Reservoir became an established suburb in the 1920s. Darebin's heritage history describes typical 1940s houses, and notes that large north-western areas stayed undeveloped into the 1960s. The housing includes standard brick and weatherboard homes. Source: Darebin Libraries: Reservoir heritage history

Because building continued across several decades, two Reservoir streets can hold houses from quite different periods. A house built or renovated before 1990 may contain asbestos materials, but only lab analysis of a sample can confirm whether a particular eave, laundry lining or garage roof is asbestos. An inspection identifies suspect material.

Darebin Council, heritage and local notes

Darebin City Council

Darebin City Council investigates asbestos as a public-health issue, and its asbestos page is a useful first stop if you are worried about material at a neighbouring property. Source: Darebin: asbestos removal

In November 2024, the local MP raised asbestos and lead contamination at Clements Reserve in Victorian Parliament. That concerns a public reserve and the Hansard record, not any home. Source: Parliament of Victoria: Hansard

How a Reservoir removal runs

  1. Send a photo of the suspect area

A picture of the eave, laundry wall or garage roof is enough to start. You do not need to know what the material is.

  2. We visit and measure

A licensed removalist looks at the material on site, and may recommend a lab sample, so the quote matches the actual job.

  3. Wrapping and transport

The removalist notifies WorkSafe Victoria, wraps the material and carries it away, so you never have to find a drop-off yourself.

  4. Clearance and records

An independent person inspects the area before it is reoccupied where clearance is required, and the disposal is logged in Waste Tracker.

What asbestos removal costs around Reservoir

These are the jobs Reservoir householders ask about most often. Each row opens a full cost guide.

Every figure includes GST, and each removal quote covers the removal itself, wrapping, transport, disposal and the independent clearance. Anything not listed is priced when we see it on site.

Can I take asbestos to the tip from Reservoir?

Possibly, in small household amounts, but not to an ordinary transfer station. The facility to ring is Wollert Landfill (Hanson), 45 Bridge Inn Road, Wollert, which takes household asbestos in packages one person can lift.

From 1 July 2026, household asbestos under 0.5 tonnes is $130 per load, and larger loads are $260 per tonne with a 0.5-tonne minimum. Fees include GST. Fees and rules can change. Always call the facility before you go.

Asbestos should be double-wrapped in 200-micron plastic and labelled. If you would rather not handle it at all, a licensed removalist records the disposal in EPA's Waste Tracker.

If you are weighing up a self-delivered load against a booked removal, the Victorian facilities guide sets out each tip's rules side by side. Victorian disposal facilities guide

Asbestos removal in Reservoir: questions

Common questions

Not necessarily. Brick and weatherboard homes built or renovated before 1990 may contain asbestos in places such as eaves, wet-area linings or garage roofs, but it is not a given. Lab analysis from $77 per sample confirms whether sampled material is asbestos, while an inspection and written report from $300 identifies suspect material. All prices include GST.

Your licensed removalist does. They notify WorkSafe Victoria at least 24 hours before non-friable work of 10m² or less, and at least 5 days before work over 10m² or any friable work.

At an EPA Victoria-authorised facility. Licensed removalists record the load in EPA's Waste Tracker, and you can ask for that record after the job.

Victorian rules differ for private householders and businesses. For any renovation involving asbestos, use a WorkSafe Victoria-licensed removalist. We can quote on site for free, and we will be in touch within 30 mins.
